Candles

Providing light is one of the simplest preps to be planned for, but should not be forgotten. Candles are the most basic way, but are also the most dangerous way.

Candles have a hugh benefit of being able to be stored almost indefinitely. They can be put in a mositure proof storage container, and stored in small spaces around the house with ease, and with little concern about rotating or care. As long as the storage area does not get hot enough to melt the candles, they can be stored with little regard to the storage climate.

Candles when purchase at full price at the store are expensive for the amount of light they give. At $0.25 ore more per small votive candle, a large stock of the candles can be a daunting financial task. However, seasonal candles for the holidays often go on sale, and can be had for as little as $0.02 per votive candle or sometimes less. When the prices get this low, the selection of ’scents’ is limited, but the primary purpose of the candle (light) is just as functional. When prices reach $0.02, buy in bulk.

When candles are being used, they can start a fire by a gust of wind, clumsy acts, or an errant pet. Fire estinguishers should always be handy, and candles should never be used unattended or while sleeping. Also, in small enclosed room, there is a risk of the smoke or carbon monoxide / dioxide poisioning. Keep these in mind, and use candles wisely in emergencies.

Blackout Curtains

November 27th, 2007 phloydius Posted in Noise & Light Discipline No Comments »

If there are any plans for sheltering in place, a key preperation needs to be the creation of blackout curtains.

In times of trouble, lights on inside will allow those outside to see more of what is taking place and to watch patterns of movement. And in cases where the mass populace has a power outage any use of flashlights, chemlights, candles or any other source of light will attrack unwanted attention.

If at all possible, cut out properly sized black out curtains to cover the interior of the window. Then store them until needed. Another option would be to buy commercial black out curtains from the store and install them ahead of time for optium security during normal times.
